Photographing what we see is not necessarily boring or irrelevant if we employ genuinely personal codes, if we study and integrate contemporary cultural influences and we redefine the term “see” to include all the senses as well as any psycho-emotional sensations intimately linked to the reality in question. However, a situation in which one is content to produce visually-inspired representations of what one merely sees and that employ the same codes and cultural baggage that millions before us have exploited in similar circumstances and from similar perspectives, can best be described as a hobby – undoubtedly entertaining for the friends and family of those who practice it, irrelevant to anyone else.
