Progress (or evolution) is not about forgetting the past, ignoring it or repeating it; it is about building on the foundations of the past and taking proven processes further down the conceptual road. Subject matter never changes and only innovative, process-based perspectives can breathe new life into old subject matter. Photographers would do well to remember this.
We don’t need clones of Cartier-Bresson, Robert Frank, Stephen Shore, Cindy Sherman or anyone else. Their genius is their uniqueness. We need new work that reflects new perspectives and avenues of investigation. This requires looking inside ourselves and asking some fundamental questions…and doing so over and over again. This is apparently more difficult than it would appear at first glance, but is definitely worth the effort.
